An Unexpected Confrontation: My Encounter with the Watchman at Udhna

Umeshkumar Tarsariya, October 2, 2024October 2, 2024

Yesterday, I found myself in an unexpected and heated confrontation with an elderly watchman while waiting in the shade of a tree near a parking area in Udhna. What started as a moment of rest while dropping off a friend quickly turned into an argument over public space and authority.

The Scene

I was in Udhna to drop off my friend, Jayeshbhai Patel after a eyeball QSO with him. While droping at udhna darwaja, I decided to take a moment in the cool shade of a tree beside the parking area. The sun was relentless, making the shade a welcome reprieve.

The Confrontation

As I stood there, enjoying the moment, the elderly watchman approached and shouted, “This is not a place to stand! You’re blocking the path!” His tone was sharp and direct, catching me off guard. I glanced around and saw that there was plenty of space for vehicles to pass.

Taken aback, I replied, “I’m not blocking anything! I’m just waiting here for my friend. This is a public area!”

Instead of calming down, he insisted that I needed to move. The exchange quickly escalated, with both of us raising our voices. My irritation grew, fueled by the heat and his aggressive approach.

A Test of Patience

As our argument continued, it became clear that both of us were frustrated. The watchman was trying to do his job, but I felt he was being overly aggressive. “I understand you have a responsibility,” I said, “but I’m not causing any trouble!”

As the confrontation drew the attention of a few bystanders, I felt a mix of embarrassment and anger. This wasn’t just a disagreement between two individuals; it had turned into a public spectacle.

Finding Common Ground

Just when it seemed that neither of us would back down, I decided to take a step back and shift my approach. “Look, I respect your job,” I said more calmly. “But can we find a way to coexist here? I’ll move if it’s truly an issue, but I just need a moment while I wait for my friend.”

To my surprise, the watchman paused. After a moment of silence, he replied, “I appreciate that. I just need to keep the path clear for the vehicles.”

We both realized that the situation didn’t have to escalate. I stepped aside, allowing space for any cars that needed to pass, and he nodded in acknowledgment.

Conclusion: A Lesson in Communication

As I walked away, reflecting on the encounter, I realized it highlighted the importance of communication and understanding. While tensions can rise quickly, a moment of patience and empathy can often diffuse even the most heated situations.

In the end, both the watchman and I wanted the same thing—a safe and functional public space. It’s easy to forget that we’re all just trying to navigate our lives in this shared environment. Moving forward, I’ll keep this experience in mind, hoping to approach future conflicts with a little more understanding. After all, we’re all in this together.
